ZeroCyl

Zero cylinders. Every engine.

Last updated: October 25, 2026

Electric cars are fast and quiet, but they're missing the thrill of an engine revving up, shifting gears and crackling on the overrun. ZeroCyl wants to bring that back.

ZeroCyl (Chinese name 零汽缸, "zero cylinders"; "cyl" is short for cylinder) is a web app. It reads your car's actual speed and acceleration and synthesizes combustion-engine sound in real time: the revs climb as you accelerate, it shifts up automatically at the right point, the exhaust pops and crackles when you lift off, and it settles back to idle when you stop. Your EV has no cylinders at all, yet it can sound like any engine.

Open ZeroCyl

Two modes, one tap to switch

Both modes share the same driving screen; tap the top of the dashboard to switch. Engine sound mode can also give speed camera alerts, and the engine sound dips automatically while a voice alert plays.

How the sound is made

ZeroCyl doesn't play recordings. It synthesizes each engine in real time from its layout: within one full engine cycle, each cylinder's exhaust pulse has its own timing and strength. Uneven spacing between the two cylinder banks produces the V8 burble, and unequal-length exhausts on opposed cylinders give the flat engine its rumble. On top of that come intake noise, turbos, the blow-off valve, fuel cut during shifts and overrun pops, with the revs and throttle depth worked out from your speed. Because it is synthesized live, the sound changes with your driving and never repeats the same recording.
