Summary

ZeroCyl doesn't require you to register an account, and doesn't store your driving route. Only when you tap "Report mobile camera" is that one location sent to our servers.

Data processed on your device

Data collected when you report a mobile speed trap

Other users see only the reported spot's location, direction, report time and number of reporters, not who reported it.

Data collected when you answer "Still there / Gone"

"Frequent speed-trap spot" statistics

After a reported spot ends, the system merges its location, direction, date and time of day into anonymous statistics, used to alert drivers to places and times where mobile speed traps are common. The statistics contain no device ID, IP address or any information about reporters, and only the most recent 90 days are kept.

Looking up nearby reports

While you drive, the app looks up nearby reported spots using an approximate location accurate to about 1 km. ZeroCyl does not store these lookups.

Road speed limits

The speed limit of the road you're on, shown on the speed camera screen, comes from OpenStreetMap (© OpenStreetMap contributors, licensed under the ODbL). The app downloads road data in blocks about 5 km square based on your location. Working out which road you're on happens entirely on your phone, and your location is not sent; the server only knows which blocks were downloaded. When OpenStreetMap has no speed limit for a road, or when an elevated road and the road beneath it can't be told apart, no speed limit is shown. The posted signs determine the actual speed limit.

Anonymous usage statistics

To know how many people use ZeroCyl, in which cities and counties, and which engines are popular, the app sends a small amount of anonymous statistics. You can turn this off with "Share anonymous usage statistics" in Settings.

Your precise location is not uploaded, and no driving route is stored. Records of current use are deleted after 15 minutes. Daily totals (numbers of users and uses, distribution by city and county) contain no information about individual devices and are kept for 400 days.

Data collected when you subscribe to ZeroCyl Plus

Data collected when you send feedback

Every 3 days, feedback is sent in a batch to Anthropic's Claude for analysis and summarized into an issue report for us. Only the feedback content, type, version, platform and diagnostic info are sent for analysis — no email address, device ID or IP. The results are for the ZeroCyl team's reference only; nothing is replied to or decided automatically.
