What is EV engine sound?
EV engine sound is a combustion engine's revs, gear shifts and overrun crackle synthesized in real time from your speed and acceleration, played through the car speakers or your phone. ZeroCyl offers 17 engines for free; connect your phone over Bluetooth, or open it in the Tesla browser.
How it works
- Speed from GPS: the speed on screen is GPS; the phone's accelerometer makes the sound react faster.
- A simulated gearbox: six ratios turn speed into rpm; how hard you accelerate sets the throttle and when it shifts up or down.
- Synthesized from engine layout: each engine simulates one full cycle of exhaust pulses. Cylinder count, firing order and crankshaft shape make the difference: the cross-plane V8 burble, the flat-four rumble, the rotary's buzz.
- Details: overrun crackle, fuel cut on shifts, turbo whistle and blow-off, and a lumpy idle are added live.
Synthesis vs recordings
Recordings stitch fixed-rpm clips together, so changes in revs can sound seamed. Real-time synthesis follows every rpm continuously and reacts to shifts and lifting off in sync with your driving, with no large audio downloads. The limit: it captures the character of a type of engine, not an exact copy of a specific car.
Legal and safety notes
- ZeroCyl plays only inside the car. Do not connect external speakers; it disturbs others and may break local rules.
- Keep the volume low enough to hear sirens, horns and traffic.
- Do not handle your phone while driving; ZeroCyl hides its settings above 10 km/h.
17 engines
American V8, German twin-turbo V8, Italian V8, V10, V12, track V10, flat-four and flat-six, inline-three, -four, -five and -six, twin-turbo V6, rotary, diesel V8 and turbine. See the engines; out of respect for trademarks ZeroCyl uses no car-maker or model names.
FAQ
Does an EV engine sound app drain the battery?
The sound synthesis is light; battery use comes mostly from GPS and keeping the screen on, about the same as running navigation. Plug in.
Does it work in a Tesla?
Yes. When parked, open zerocyl.app in the touchscreen browser; it opens the in-car version and plays through the car speakers, no phone needed.
Can I use it with navigation and music?
The apps run in the background. On the iPhone web app, engine sound mode pauses music (the sound is the point); speed camera mode plays alongside music and only dips it while speaking.
